Our Towns Oamaru is the District's capital, providing a home to the majority of the population with its associated schools, business services, manufacturing and processing plants. Oamaru also offers the bulk of amenities including a library, museum, art gallery, public gardens, hospital and professional and community services. Townships throughout the district initially grew to service their local rural communities. As agricultural fortunes rose and fell over the years, these communities developed a hardy resilience and individual character. Today many of our coastal and inland townships feature a mixture of permanent residences and holiday homes. These communities are located from 10 to 80 minutes drive from Oamaru and offer a range of unique rural lifestyles within easy commuting distance from Oamaru. The Waitaki Valley, shaped like a long narrow triangle, begins at the rugged Southern Alps, takes in the Waitaki hydro dams and lakes, passes through productive farmland, horticulture and viticulture growing areas, before reaching the Pacific Ocean coastline. The Valley contains a collection of small townships that offer unique lifestyles, caring communities and a wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities. South of Oamaru down State Highway 1 are a number of small villages that offer unique rural lifestyles close to the ocean where beaches are uncrowded, the air is fresh, the views are spectacular and communities are close-knit and welcoming. |
