Waitaki – Film Friendly Territory
In Southern New Zealand we’ve got the best filming locations, all centralised through Film Otago Southland.
In the Waitaki District we have:
• 150km of beautiful Pacific Ocean coastline; sandy beaches, harsh rocky outcrops and fishing villages nestled in protected bays
• 200km of magnificent Waitaki River valley; lush green fields to high country brown barren wasteland
• High country sheep and cattle stations, snow covered in winter and hot, hot during summer
• Mountain ranges, covered with pristine snow in winter
• The mighty Waitaki River feeding three hydro power stations, creating our superb Lakes Benmore, Waitaki and Aviemore
• The only remaining 19th century harbour in New Zealand, complete with original jetties, right in the town of Oamaru
• Magnificent 19th century Oamaru Stone architecture heritage buildings in the Historic Precinct, right in the town of Oamaru
Waitaki is proudly Film Friendly. We have a history of film-making in the district, most recently The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe, Bride Flight and Kingdom Come, a film currently being made on the Life of Christ with a replica of the 2,000 year old village of Capernaum being constructed on the shores of Lake Benmore - it looks just like the Sea of Galilee. International documentaries and TV commercials abound with scenes filmed in and around our place.
Whatever you need, we are here to help. Our job is to make it easy for you to get on with your job.
